Cosmetics Brand Claims Kardashian Sisters Stole Their Name
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Kardashian sisters are on the cusp of launching their new brand of cosmetics and that already has a rival company ready to lash out.
The co-owner of Chroma Makeup Studio has accused Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian of trademark infringement over their new cosmetics line, Khroma, saying the reality TV stars stole his brand's name.
Michael Rey said he may now take legal action against the sisters' latest venture.
"We're going to do everything that we can to defend ourselves," Rey said.
An intellectual property attorney said it all comes down to how difficult it is for customers to distinguish between the brands.
It depends on how "close they are in terms of their names, and what they look like, and where would I go looking for these things, how are they marketed," attorney Alex Angarita said.
Rey said it took 12 years to establish Chroma, based in Beverly Hills, and several celebrities are fans of his products. He believes that the Kardashians' brand would cheapen his line and create confusion among clients.
Khroma products will be sold in pharmacies and department stores nationwide starting in November.
