Corvette Driver Fatally Shot By Police After Wild Chase Is Identified

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have identified the man they say was fatally shot by police on Friday night after he led several law enforcement agencies on an hour-long chase.

Los Angeles Coroner's office Capt. John Kades told City News Service that Brian Newt Beaird of Oceanside died at a hospital 43 minutes after being shot.

Officials say the 51-year-old was behind-the-wheel of a silver, late-model Corvette that failed to yield in Cudahy when officers tried to initiate a traffic stop for reckless driving.

Thereafter, police said the suspect led authorities through several areas, including Bell, Huntington Park, and downtown Los Angeles.

The pursuit ended at Olympic Boulevard and Los Angeles Street with a violent crash.

Police opened fire when the man stumbled out of the Corvette.
