Corona Homeowners Struggling To Make Ends Meet Hit With New Setback

CORONA (CBSLA.com) —  Several families struggling to make ends meet in Corona have been hit with another setback -- a rent increase.

CBS2's Crystal Cruz many of the mobile homeowners are asking the city for help. And Cruz reports that's another struggle.

"We were gonna retire here," says  Kathleen Moon.

Moon, in her 70's, didn't expect to be moving. She can't afford a $129 rent increase that is expected to hit in May.

"My husband and I have rebuilt everything. We put in a new roof, all new insulation, new floors," Moon says.

Moon owns her manufactured home in La Linda Mobile Homes in Corona and rents the space.

She says ownership sent out this letter in December notifying homeowners of the increase from $650 to $779 a month because of property tax.

"I'm on a fixed income I can't prepare for that," Moon says.

The letter says to apply for rental assistance if this creates a hardship but Moon says she doesn't qualify.

"We just want something fair," says Lydia H.

She  also rents a space. She has a sign out front that reads: "My home after May 1st No help from Corona Mayors."

"It means a very hardship a very high hardship for us," Lydia said.

Many would like to see the City Council step in and fear more increases are on the horizon.

Moon is now selling her home but says a rent increase has scared away buyers.

"You can't sell, you can't get out," she said.

The Vice Mayor of Corona says this is a private matter between business owner and tenants.

Cruz called management several times for a comment and was yet to hear back at press time.
