Conscious Uncoupling! 2 Local Establishments Hold 'Single Awareness Day'
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Sick of Valentine's Day yet?
Some local establishments reached out to people who aren't in relationships. Also known as single people.
On Valentine's Day, perhaps the most romantic day of the year, two local establishments chose to celebrate what is now known as "Single Awareness Day."
CBS2's Cristy Fajardo reports the day spells out S.A.D. but these groups are making sure no one was sad on this day.
Two bars on one block in downtown L.A. threw the themed party Saturday with one goal -- to make singles into duos.
While the rest of the city caters to couples in love, Beelman's Pub and Spring Street Bar are celebrating the single file.
And playing matchmaker. After all, Fajardo reports, nothing says love like Tinder.
Tinder!? For the unaware, Tinder is an app known more for hookups than love connections.
Patrons were asked to take a photo in a Tinder booth. For those who made a match, a chance to take "It's a Match!" photos.
Fajardo spoke to Dylan Schneider, dressed head-to-toe in a red suit covered in white hearts. She asked him if he was a love expert.
"Judging from your outfit you know a lot about love," she said.
"That's a loaded question. I dabble in it well," said Schneider. He clearly wants others to dabble, too.
That's why he created the Tinder Valentine's Day Ball -- In honor of "Single Awareness Day" or S.A.D. That's what some are now calling Feb. 14.
But there's nothing "sad" about this celebration
"No one should be alone on Valentine's Day," Schneider said.
"We're having a good time just being with friends," said one woman. "And not worrying about whether someone is going to call you, because they won't."
The celebration also featured a kissing booth and a date auction. The highest bidder got an hour date with some of Schneider's friends.
Proceeds go to Planned Parenthood.
On a day that focuses on couples the celebration of singles was a good reminder, reported Fajardo, that there are many of the same heart -- and mind.
