Computer Glitch Strands United Airlines Passengers For Hours At LAX

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A computer glitch at the United Airlines terminal at LAX Friday evening has thousands of passengers seeing more lines than air.

The computer glitch means passengers around the nation are stranded, some at LAX waiting more than five hours just to check in.

Airline personnel are checking passengers in manually causing the extended delays.

United officials stress the computer glitch is not causing any safety concerns.

No word on what caused the computer malfunction or how long that United expects its system to be shut down.

The back-up is also causing delays throughout United's travel routes. Planes are unable to depart, passengers can't get checked in (unless manually) and reservations cannot be confirmed, made or canceled.

Sky9 flying overhead the LAX terminal showed lines of passengers out the door.

The computer glitch first happened around 5 p.m. this evening.

There have been reports of long lines and back-ups at especially large hubs like Chicago and Denver.

Just after 10:35 Friday, Suzanne Marques -- reporting from LAX for CBS2 and KCAL9, tweeted the glitch has been fixed and that lines were moving (slowly) for 32 outbound flights.
