Compton Parents Call Petition Check Process Unfair
COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — Some parents are denouncing the Compton Unified School District's policy on verifying signatures on a petition calling for an underperforming elementary school to be turned into a charter school.
Members of McKinley Parents for Change said in a statement Monday that each of the 276 parents who signed the petition must come to the school next Wednesday or Thursday for a brief meeting with district officials. They must present photo identification and sign a new petition.
If parents do not show up for any reason, their signature will be eliminated from the petition, which marks the first use of California's "parent trigger" law that allows parents to demand school reform. The group calls the process intimidating and unethical.
Compton Unified officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
