Compton Elects New Mayor After Corruption Case
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The city of Compton has a new mayor Wednesday following a overwhelming victory for urban planner and activist Aja Brown.
Brown, 31, defeated former mayor Omar Bradley - who still faces a retrial in a public corruption case - with 64 percent of the vote on Tuesday.
A resident of Compton for just four years, Brown campaigned on a platform of restoring integrity to City Hall after the 55-year-old Bradley was convicted in 2004 of misappropriating public funds.
Brown herself has been personally impacted by the city's fiscal woes: she was laid off from her position in a Compton city agency just two years ago.
During her campaign, Brown pledged to Hutchinson pledged to work with entrepreneurs and business leaders to restore Compton as the primary hub for business.
