Robbery Suspect Wounded In Compton Deputy-Involved Shooting
COMPTON (CBSLA) — A deputy-involved shooting in Compton Monday left one armed robbery suspect wounded and in custody, along with a second suspect who was uninjured.
A robbery was reported at 9:24 a.m. in the 700 block of West Spruce Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
One deputy suffered a minor laceration to his forehead that was unrelated to the gunfire, sheriff's Lt. Rodney Moore told reporters at the scene.
"Detectives have learned that an armed robbery had just occurred at a business located on the 1000 block of Wilmington Avenue, Compton," according to a sheriff's department statement.
"After the robbery, two deputies, driving in an unmarked vehicle, located the suspect vehicle. As the deputies started to follow the suspect vehicle it stopped and the deputies attempted to detain the occupants of the suspect vehicle. During the contact between the deputies and the suspects, one of the suspects produced a firearm and a deputy-involved shooting occurred."
Both suspects ran from the scene, but were quickly detained by assisted units, the sheriff's department reported.
A black handgun was recovered at the scene, but investigators say it's unclear if the suspect fired at deputies, officials said.
The 18-year-old suspect who was wounded had been driving the vehicle. He was taken to a hospital but an update on condition was not made available more than nine hours after the shooting.
A 17-year-old boy who was passenger in the vehicle was not injured.
It's unclear how the deputy was injured.
