Compton Decides Against Forming Its Own Police Department
COMPTON (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies will continue patrols in Compton.
Budget realities forced the City Council to scrap plans for its own 100-officer city police force. The city is facing a $33 million budget deficit and layoffs are possible.
The council's vote Tuesday night rescinds last June's vote to end its $16 million a year contract with the sheriff. Councilwoman Barbara Calhoun, one of the three who voted in favor of a city police department, switched her vote.
The Los Angeles Times says Compton had already spent $1.7 million on preparations to set up the new department.
