San Pedro Residents Help Raise Funds For Homeless Woman Who Rescued Abandoned Dog

SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — A local community Tuesday was trying to help a Good Samaritan who walked three miles to help rescue an abandoned dog.

The 1-year-old Pointer-mix named Joey was found by Lisa Snyder wandering Point Fermin Park in San Pedro after breaking free from the light post.

The dog had a handwritten note attached to his collar that read: "My name is Joey. I am looking for a home. Please take care of me!!"

Snyder said Joey was snapping and growling at people, but after some time she was able to calm him down.

"At first, I asked a lot of people, 'Would you like a dog?' And of course, nobody would like a dog. So, then I thought, 'Well, what am I gonna do?' " she said.

Snyder, who needs the use of a cane, walked Joey three miles to the county animal shelter, stopping only to get out of the rain.

She currently lives out of her van with her three rescue cats.

Community members in San Pedro were so touched with what Snyder did, they set up a GoFundMe page to help her on Monday.

"She walked three miles each way in cold rainy weather. Not an easy thing when you have health problems. Lisa lives out of her van since she fell on hard times and could use help to repair her vehicle. She opened her heart, let's open ours and help her," the fundraiser page read.

The page aims to raise $500 for her. To donate, click here.

Joey was taken to the Harbor Animal Care Center, where he was put on a 10-day hold before he becomes available for adoption March 13.
