Committee Approves $15M To 2 Girls Whose Father Was Killed By Cal Fire Truck
SAN BERNARDINO (AP) -- A state legislative committee has agreed to pay $15 million to two Southern California girls whose father was killed in a collision with a Cal Fire truck.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee approved the payment this week to Amethyst and Belle Kirwin, who were 4 and 7 when their father was killed in a August 2012 collision in Highland.
Gregory Kirwin of Banning was driving on Highway 210 when he was rear-ended by a pickup driven by Timothy McClelland, Cal Fire's San Bernardino unit chief. An investigation report said McClelland couldn't see through the debris in front of his pickup when he struck Kirwin's vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor manslaughter in the case.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports the state Assembly and Senate must also approve the settlement.
