Coachella Airspace Will Be Restricted After 2008 Pro-Obama Confetti Drop
INDIO (CBS) — Two miles of sky over the Empire Polo Field will be restricted airspace during the Coachella music festival in Indio next month.
The Federal Aviation Administration will ask aircraft not to fly below 2,000 feet within two miles of the Empire Polo Field, where the festival will be held over two weekends in April.
Aircraft toting promotional banners are a common site over events attracting thousands of people, or even at the beach on a hot summer day. The restriction was requested by Sen. Barbara Boxer four years after a plane flying at 350 feet sprinkled pro-President Obama confetti over the concert venue and more than a dozen surrounding neighborhoods, according to the Desert Sun.
The FAA will be on site to make sure pilots do not fly below 2,000 feet when they are within a two-mile radius of the polo grounds.
The Coachella music festival will be held April 13-15 and 20-22.
