Clean Up Begins After Massive Water Main Break In Venice
VENICE (CBS) — Residents of Venice are beginning to clean up their homes and streets after a massive noon water main break Friday.
Firefighters were sent to the 200 block of Carrol Court Walk after receiving reports of flooding in the area.
Officials said a six-inch main broke flooding streets and homes with thousands of gallons of water.
Some residents remain without water.
Kristine Lazar, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, talked to residents who reported seeing huge amounts of water cascading down their streets.
Reporting from the scene about 5 hours after the break, Lazar reported "DWP is making significant progress."
Bob Venach, a Venice resident who lives near the break, said "It was like an explosion."
The front of his home looked like the canal behind his property. "There was this massive rush of water. It looked like a sink hole and there was this vortex sucking garbage bins down with it."
Ten engine companies responded to the call keeping damage to a relative minimum. Only two homes suffered any significant flood damage.
Resident Devon Daley said "This canal typically floods after a heavy rain, but this was on steroids."
No injuries were reported.
