Classes Canceled For OC Students After Power Pole Crash

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Students in Anaheim got an early start to the weekend on Friday after a traffic accident knocked down power lines.

The outage occurred after a Jeep Cherokee crashed into a power pole near Magnolia High School between Magnolia and Gilbert around 6 a.m., according to utility officials.

Margie Otto from the Anaheim Public Utility told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO that eastbound Ball Road was shut down as crews raced to restore power to thousands in the neighborhood, including the school.

"It knocked out about 5,000 customers," Otto said. "About 1,200 customers are still out; that includes Magnolia High School."

Power was restored for about 75 percent of the utility's customers by mid-morning, but the blackout forced officials to cancel classes for the day.

Otto said the school was expected to regain power by 4 p.m. this afternoon.

"The pole itself carried multiple circuits, and so there are some pieces that are a little bit harder to fix, and that's where the restoration's gonna take longer," she said.

Some minor injuries were reportedly sustained in the crash, but no one was seriously injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
