City Councilman Leads Effort To Lure Olympics Back To LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — If City Councilman Tom LaBonge gets his way, it could be 1984 all over again in 2032.

LaBonge plans to introduce a motion Friday to bring the Olympic Games back to Los Angeles.

Podcast

The motion will call on the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games to explore a future bid, possibly as early as 2024. The city last played host to the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

"We would like to at least have them look at the possibility for the near future for the games again," LaBonge told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

LaBonge said Los Angeles uniquely offers the weather, the history and - with 45 London medals to Los Angeles's name - the competitive talent to provide a world-class Olympic experience.

According to LaBonge, the 2032 Olympic Games would likely be the earliest possibility — exactly 100 years after Los Angeles first hosted the Games.

"Whenever it is, it's so important that Los Angeles has its name right in there," said LaBonge.
