CHP Officer Seriously Hurt In Wreck Near Downtown LA; Driver Arrested For DUI
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer and
two other people were injured -- including a driver who was later arrested
on suspicion of DUI -- in a multi-vehicle crash Thursday that shut down the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles.
The crash occurred at 10:43 a.m. on the westbound 10 Freeway at Normandie Avenue when an officer who was called to investigate an earlier crash near Normandie Avenue parked
his motorcycle in the shoulder of the freeway, said CHP Officer Roberto Gomez.
As he directed traffic while a tow truck the vehicles, a Nissan Altima traveling in the left shoulder at high speed crashed into the motorcycle, which ``was then pushed into the officer and ultimately pushed into the Prius and the tow truck,'' Gomez said.
Three people, including a CHP officer, were rushed to hospitals with serious injuries.
The driver of the Nissan fled the scene, but was apprehended by two people and held for authorities, according to Gomez.
That motorist was treated for minor injuries and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, he said.
The westbound 10 Freeway was completely shut down just east of Normandie Avenue following the crash.
