Chargers Won't Be Moving To LA As Bolts Commit To Play In San Diego For 2013 Season
LOS ANGELES - (CBSLA.com) - Just as the San Diego Chargers announced the hiring of their new head coach Mike McCoy Tuesday, Bolts officials have told San Diego Mayor Bob Filner that the team will stay put and continue to play at Qualcomm stadium for 2013 season, according to the LA Times.
"For more than a decade the Chargers have done everything possible to find a stadium solution in San Diego," said Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani, "and we are going to continue to work hard in 2013 with the new mayor and city council."
The San Diego Mayor plans to make an announcement late Tuesday night.
When and if a team is lured to L.A., Farmer's Field (AEG) would likely be their location, with extensive plans already in place.
"I do believe they will end up in Los Angeles, barring a miracle here in San Diego," said Union Tribune's Kevin Acee in a phone interview with Gary Miller. "But they[Spanos Family] do want to stay in San Diego. They know they have time. They wouldn't be playing in Farmers Field right away anyway. I do believe it's time for people in San Diego to be fretting for the Chargers leaving in 14 or 15."
"We've been active with our friends in the NFL we've been active with the league office," said the Chairman of AEG Tim Lewieke to CBS2/KCAL9's Jim Hill on Sunday.
"But most of all we understand that until we get this sell completed and we bring them an owner that is prepared to write the check, to build farmers field and prepare to be an equity partner in the NFL, nothing else matters."
The Chargers are not only the closest of the existing NFL teams most often mentioned as primed for relocation, but perhaps the one with the most to gain in facility and financial upgrades.
