Caught On Tape: Fight Between 6th Graders Turns Into 3-On-1 Beating Involving Adults
SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — A fight between two sixth-grade girls in San Pedro quickly escalated Monday afternoon with two adults jumping in.
The after school fight was caught on cell phone video and posted on Facebook.
Police say at least one of the adults has been identified and charges could be filed in the attack.
Rachel Kim, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said the fight began behind a San Pedro liquor store near Dana Middle School in San Pedro.
Police told Kim the fight was between "friends."
Says Sgt. Gerry Davila of the LAPD Harbor Station, "They both attend the same middle school. They were friends at some point. They had some sort of argument."
The fight quickly turned into a 3-on-1 beating. And two of the three were 30-something adults.
It is not clear who took the cell phone video but at least two other students are clearly visible filming throughout.
The 12-year-old victim told police the girl she was going to fight unexpectedly brought two adults with her. Says Davila, "The victim believes the two females are family members of the suspect."
The video clearly shows a woman in a blue shirt pummeling the victim (in an orange shirt.) Kim said you can also hear the woman cursing at the 12-year-old who also throws punches. A second woman is shown helping hold the 12-year-old down.
Davila says, "It's serious. It's a battery."
In the video, one of the adult females -- who is white -- can also be heard using the N word against the 12-year-old victim. Do police think they are dealing with a hate crime as well? Davila said, "There's no evidence to suggest that at this time."
The investigation is on-going. Davila says, "One of the adults was identified. If the city attorney deems it appropriate, all three can be arrested at some point in the future."
