Carson Group Launches Online Effort To Drum Up Support For NFL Stadium
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The city of Carson is joining a growing list of cities fighting to lure the NFL back to Los Angeles County.
KNX 1070's Margaret Carrero reports supporters have launched a ballot initiative in favor of building a stadium that could eventually house the Chargers and Raiders.
An online petition launched by Carson2gether hopes to net 8,000 signatures as part of an effort to land a 70,000-seat stadium at Del Amo and the 405 Freeway.
A similar effort was taken up in Inglewood last month for an 80,000-seat stadium backed by the owner of the St. Louis Rams.
But according to Carson2gether's Fred MacFarlane, the group's efforts are not aimed at competing with Inglewood.
"Our task right now is to circulate petitions and really capitalize on the enthusiasm in the Carson community for this project," MacFarlane said.
Supporters of the stadium say taxpayers will not be responsible for the development, but some critics have warned any potential developers could receive millions of dollars in excess tax revenue.
Carson resident Patrick is among those who said he's willing to pay extra taxes if necessary.
"I think it would help Carson gain some more income for the city," he said.
NFL officials say there are no plans for any of the three teams to move to Los Angeles in 2015, but the Chargers, Raiders and Rams are all on year-to-year leases at their current facilities.
The league also noted that any team moving to Los Angeles would need approval from three-quarters of the league's owners.
