Car Plunges Off Malibu Cliff Killing Driver And Igniting Brushfire
MALIBU (CBS)— The driver of a vehicle that went over an embankment in an unincorporated area near Malibu Thursday sparking a brush fire that charred about two acres was found badly burned and dead.
The blaze was reported about noon on a hillside near Kanan Dume Road and Latigo Canyon Road, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Brian Riley. It was declared out at 2:07 p.m., a department dispatcher said.
The driver was found by firefighters in the vehicle that was about 200 feet down an embankment, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Mark Savage.
The fire came on a day when wind gusts were clocked at 46 mph in Malibu Canyon and 76 mph in the Malibu Hills.
