Reckless Driving Suspect Rams San Bernardino Sheriff's Patrol Car; Young Child Hospitalized
SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA) — A man who authorities say rammed a San Bernardino County sheriff's patrol car following a high-speed chase is dead Friday.
The chase began just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday when deputies attempted to pull over a reckless driving suspect on the eastbound 210 Freeway near Highland Avenue, authorities said.
When the driver failed to stop, a chase ensued and the suspect continued driving at a high rate of speed before exiting the freeway and knocking over a mailbox, according to sheriff's officials.
The chase ended at June and Blake streets in Muscoy when deputies attempted to get the driver out of the car. At that point the suspect reversed his car and rammed the deputies' patrol car, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
Deputies found the driver's two-year-old child inside the car. The child was not restrained in a child safety seat but had no obvious injuries, according to officials. He was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
The driver, later identified as Juan Ayon-Ruiz, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No deputies were injured.
