Car Chase Ends With Crash Into Fire Hydrant
LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A police pursuit ended with a fatal crash into a fire hydrant early Tuesday morning in Long Beach.
A burglary suspect in a white car hit an SUV making a left turn and then crashed into a fire hydrant, sending water shooting up into the air at Long Beach Boulevard and Victoria Street at the end of a chase just before 6 a.m.
The burglary suspect was ejected from the car and declared dead on the scene. The driver of the other car wasn't injured, according to Long Beach fire officials.
The burglary suspect was not immediately identified.
The car, which was wanted in connection with a burglary, was being chased by Los Angeles police and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies.
After the crash, a crowd gathered at the scene and two people, possibly distraught family members of the suspect, were detained by police officers.
Antowan Parker, 27, of Bellflower was booked on suspicion of resisting/obstructing a police officer, said Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson. Another person, also suspected of resisting/obstructing an officer, was released "due to a pre-existing medical condition," pending further investigation, he said.
The Long Beach Boulevard offramp from the southbound 710 Freeway was closed while an investigation was conducted, according to the California Highway Patrol.
