California Exporters Ship $11.7B In Merchandise, Set Records
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Exporters in California are setting records, shipping $11.7 billion in merchandise abroad in January, the highest total for that month since at least 1987.
The value of exports is up nearly 15 percent from January 2010. Beacon Economics reported Thursday that the latest numbers mark the 15th consecutive month of year-over-year export gains, based on federal data.
Shipments of manufactured goods rose 11.6 percent, while farm products and other non-manufactured exports climbed nearly 19 percent.
The outlook is for moderate export growth, with a weak dollar offset by austerity budgets in Europe and anti-inflation efforts in China and elsewhere.
Rising fuel prices represent the biggest unknown for exporters.
