Calif. Bill Would Expand Ban On Requesting Passwords
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Lawmakers are sending Gov. Jerry Brown legislation that would expand California's prohibition against employers asking job candidates or employees for access to their social media accounts.
The Senate approved AB25 by Democratic Assemblywoman Nora Campos of San Jose 32-1 on Wednesday.
Her bill would add public employers to the list of those barred from asking potential employees for their Facebook, Twitter or other passwords. It expands on her legislation from last year, which Brown signed into law.
The state sheriffs' association and probation officers oppose AB25, saying it could hamper their ability to investigate potential employees.
But Democratic Sen. Bill Monning of Carmel, who carried the bill in the Senate, says law enforcement officers also deserve privacy. He says the bill would not prevent "legitimate inquiry into an applicant's background."
