Brush Fire Scorches 1,000 Acres At Camp Pendleton
CAMP PENDLETON (AP) — A fire that began during a training exercise on the Camp Pendleton Marine base has burned about 1,000 acres.
The fire began Friday in an area often used for artillery training.
Marine officials said the fire moved rapidly north early Saturday toward an area where the Southern California base borders the Cleveland National Forest. But by late afternoon firefighters gained control and slowed its growth significantly.
The blaze is 30 percent contained.
There have been no reports of injuries or damage to structures.
The fire sent a huge cloud of smoke that could be seen throughout northern San Diego county.
