Bronze Statue Honoring Late-MLB Player Cory Lidle Vandalized
WEST COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday were searching for a vandal they say caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to a bronze statue honoring the late-MLB player Cory Lidle.
The statue on Azusa Avenue in the city of West Covina was unveiled in October 2007 in honor of Lidle, who was killed in a small aircraft crash in 2006.
"The vandalism to the Cory Lidle statue is a deplorable act by some despicable human beings," said West Covina City Mayor Steve Herfert. "To damage a statue memorializing the life of Cory Lidle is very personal to all of our residents. Cory's life represents the hopes and dreams of every baseball player and kind person in our City."
The vandalism was discovered about 6:30 a.m. Friday by employees of the West Covina Big League Dream Park.
In addition to damage to the statue, West Covina police said three bronze plaques, valued at over $6,000, were taken.
Police said the suspects in this case remain unknown but that an investigation is underway.
