The competition involves the votes from readers of consumerist.com.
"My guess is that there is generalized hatred of the oil industry now, especially with high gas prices," said Chris Moran, senior editor of consumerist.com.
Bank of America was voted the second worst company in the U.S.
Comcast, which also ranked high on the annual list, tried to rig the competition this year, according to Moran. The cable company won the award in 2010.
"They sent out an e-mail to all 40,000 employees asking them to vote and their families to vote....There were so many people at the company that were angered at this, that their own company would rather fix the competition than fix the company, that they actually sent us the screen grabs of the e-mail," said Moran.
