Boy's Soccer Coach Charged With 5 Sex-Related Felony Counts
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The coach of a private soccer club for boys was charged Wednesday with five felony sex-related counts involving a teenage boy.
Javier Arrioja, 48, pleaded not guilty late this afternoon in Los Angeles Superior Court to four counts of committing a lewd act upon a child and one count of sending harmful matter.
Arrioja is a coach for the Missioneros, a private soccer club for boys under 17 in the East Los Angeles area, according to the District Attorney's Office.
The alleged offenses occurred between May and November 2011 -- when the boy was 14. Deputy District Attorney Jane Creighton alleges the offenses occurred at various locales including local parks and Arrioja's home.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Shelly Torrealba issued a protective order barring Arrioja from contacting the minor and ordered Arrioja not to be alone with children under the age of 18 without adult supervision.
The judge set bail at $100,000 for Arrioja, who has been jailed since being arrested Friday by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Special Victims Bureau.
He is due back in court March 5 for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.
The Sheriff's department believes there may be additional victims.
If convicted, Arrioja faces a maximum of five years and eight months in state prison.
