Boyle Heights Toddler Kidnapped By Father Found Safe In Texas

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 2-year-old boy who was kidnapped by his father has been found safe in Texas.

Authorities say Edwin Vargas was found Wednesday night and is now in protective custody with the Department of Children Services. His father, Abraham Vargas, was arrested and is being held on a $1 million warrant in Texas.

Edwin was taken from his mother, Beatriz Perez, on May 23, as she put him in his car seat in her minivan in front of their home in the 1000 block of Lorena Street in Boyle Heights. Police say that's when Vargas, who is the boy's biological father and Perez's ex-boyfriend, pushed her away and stole the van with Edwin inside.

Perez has full custody of Edwin and a restraining order against Vargas.

Edwin's abduction generated an Amber alert, and police say they put into motion enormous resources to find him.

Detectives are now working to reunite Edwin with his mother, police said.
