Boyfriend Of San Bernardino Massacre Victim Breaks Silence
RIALTO (CBSLA.com) — A loved one of a victim of the San Bernardino massacre broke his silence Tuesday about the FBI's feud with Apple Inc., and the latest terrorist attack in Brussels.
"There honestly isn't a single bad memory of Daniel," said Ryan Reyes in opening up after months of staying under the radar.
Reyes' boyfriend, Daniel Kaufman, was among those killed during the San Bernardino massacre in December.
Reyes kept a low profile as the FBI and Apple battled it out over breaking into to the terrorist's iPhone until now.
"My biggest thing was, you know, your paranoia with the government looking at your cat videos is preventing something that could save lives," he said.
Amid the court battles, Reyes is still focused on the memories he had with the love of his life.
When the FBI announced it hacked into Syed Farook's phone without Apple's help, Reyes was thrilled. He says it's egg on the face of Apple CEO Tim Cook.
On the attack in Brussels last week, Reyes says he had to turn away from the coverage.
"Once I heard the news about what was happening in Brussels, I actually avoided looking into what was happening just because I knew I would have to relive it all over again," he said. "It was bad enough that somebody else was going to have to go through it."
Reyes says every day he cycles through his happiest memories with Kaufman. Among them, their last moments on the day he died.
"I had taken him to work that day and I had stayed a little bit longer to have a smoke with him and just talk and one of the last things he had said to me was, 'I love you. Have a good day.' And I said, 'I love you, too. And I'll text you when my doctor's appointment is over,' " he said.
Reyes says he's eager to learn the full truth about what happened for his sake and Kaufman's.
