A boy was shot and killed at a home in Lancaster Thursday evening, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies responded to a report of a shooting victim in the 44000 block of Dahlia Street just before 6 p.m. and discovered the child suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home, the department said in a news release Friday. They tried saving the boy by treating him until first responders with the LA County Fire Department arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff's officials said.

No suspects have been arrested as of Friday morning.

The victim's age and identity have not been released by the department.

Upon investigation, detectives learned that the victim had been visiting a friend at the home and did not live there, according to the department. Family members of the boy have been notified about his death.

No one was arrested and the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear.

"No additional information will be released at this time," the news release from the sheriff's department reads.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
