Border Patrol: Truck With 9 Tons Of Pot Stopped At San Clemente Checkpoint
SAN CLEMENTE (AP) — The Border Patrol says its agents have found more than nine tons of marijuana worth an estimated $14.7 million when they inspected a truck at the San Clemente checkpoint.
Officials say a 43-year-old American driving a tractor-trailer was directed to a secondary inspection area Thursday at the Interstate 5 checkpoint.
A drug-sniffing dog alerted agents to the trailer, which was loaded with pallets of pot packed in 218 cardboard boxes.
The marijuana weighed nearly 18,500 pounds.
The driver's name was not immediately released. He and the truck, along with the marijuana, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
