Bobby Shriver Running For LA County Supervisor Seat

WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Bobby Shriver, the nephew of President John F. Kennedy, is running for the supervisor of Los Angeles County's Third District.

Shriver, a Yale-educated lawyer, comes from an overachieving family—not only was his late uncle President Kennedy, but his mother is Eunice Shriver and his sister is former California first lady Maria Shriver.

"We all competed to do things we thought our parents would be proud of us for," he said.

Shriver is the fourth candidate to enter the race to fill the vacancy that will be left by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who is leaving due to term limits.

Shriver spent eight years on the Santa Monica City Council and is the co-founder of a multi-national charity with U2 lead singer Bono that works for social equality and the elimination of the AIDS epidemic in Africa. He has also raised millions for the Special Olympics, a foundation his mother created in the 1960s.

Shriver told CBS2's Randy Paige that the issues he's committed to for the Westside include housing for homeless veterans, better public transportation, clean water and access health care.

"I think when people hear the story of what I did in fact get…it's not easy to get $15 billion for people in Africa who don't vote, who have AIDS… from a Republican administration in the United States," he said.

Shriver said the issues facing the Third District aren't easy to fix either, but he hopes the voters will give him a chance to try.
