Bill Will Require Private, Charter Schools To Keep Possibly Concussed Athletes Off Field
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation that will require private and charter schools in California to keep student athletes off the field if there is a concern that they received a concussion.
Current law already requires public schools to remove such students from athletic activity. Those schools also must provide information about concussions to the athletes and their parents.
AB588 from Democratic Assemblyman Steve Fox of Palmdale extends those requirements to the state's private and charter schools.
Student athletes who might have a concussion may not resume practicing or competition until they have been cleared in writing by a licensed health care provider.
Brown announced signing the bill Monday. It will go into effect in January.
