Big Rig, Freight Train Collide On Tracks In Rowland Heights, 1 Injured
ROWLAND HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — A truck driver was recovering Wednesday after his big rig was involved in a collision with a Union Pacific freight train in the San Gabriel Valley.
The crash happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Nogales Street near Gale Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to the CHP, the big rig was in traffic and stopped on the tracks, unable to move, when the freight train's engine struck the metal trailer, spilling the truck's load of Nesquik milk powder and ice tea.
One of the train's cars caught fire, but it was quickly extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The 52-year-old big rig driver was transported to St. Jude Medical Center with minor injuries.
Two Union Pacific employees aboard the train did not suffer any injuries.
The big rig was hauled away just from the scene around 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Last April, the California Transportation Commission voted to allocate more than $25 million in construction funds to the intersection where the collision occurred.
