Beverly Hills Bids To Halt Subway Tunnel At School
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The latest attempt to build a subway line into the crowded Westside of Los Angeles has hit a bumpy stretch — in Beverly Hills.
Officials in the affluent city are alarmed by a proposal to drill a train tunnel 70 feet below the high school.
Regional transit consultants say drilling would be safe. But there's fear on campus that plans for new classrooms and parking would be threatened, or buildings could be damaged.
A generation ago, an attempt to build a subway from downtown Los Angeles to the beaches of Santa Monica was cut short by local opposition and fear over tunneling. Los Angeles was left with about 20 miles of subterranean subway, barely piercing a city that sprawls over 468 square miles.
