Best Things To Do This Weekend In LA - March 4

Living in Southern California means we are pretty spoiled when it comes to all the activities available. From art, culture, entertainment and food, LA is the place to be. Whether your budget is strong or you're looking for lower cost activities, the options in LA are endless. Each week we try and narrow down a short list of the best options to make the itinerary a bit easier to finalize. Here is your weekend Los Angeles.

Friday, March 4

Bibliophilia Binge
The Last Bookstore
453 S Spring St.
Los Angeles, CA 90013
(213) 488-0599
www.lastbookstorela.com

Aside from the very cool jab the name takes at the current digital age, there is something undoubtedly spectacular about walking into a space some 22,000 square feet big that is devoted entirely to books. Standard shelves would be one thing, but art installations made of books dot the floor plan in a way that makes the pages come alive during your browsing. The second floor of this LA bookstore is called the Labyrinth, as the winding pathways sandwiches between thousands and thousands of selections balance the fine line between overwhelming and awesome. As just one of the destinations that has rejuvenated the Downtown Los Angeles landscape, the Last Bookstore is an ideal place to get lost for the night.

Saturday, March 5

Stroll Historic LA
Olvera Street
845 N Alameda St,
Los Angeles, CA 90012
www.olvera-street.com

While most Angelenos know of Olvera Street, a stroll through the Placita Olvera is a rite of passage for anyone living in Southern California, native or transplant. This historic charm of Downtown Los Angeles' oldest section includes original adobe buildings like Avila Adobe (1818), the Pelanconi House (1857), and the Sepulveda House (1887). An essential part of the Olvera experience is food from any of the restaurants, though most people will argue that some taquitos from Cielito Lindo is about as LA as it gets. From the art to the early southwest architecture, from the food to the people, Olvera is part of the fabric of LA and well worth an afternoon of exploring.

Few musicians enjoy the kind of acclaim Johnny Marr does. Widely regarded as one of the most influential British alternative guitarists, Marr's work with The Smiths continues to inspire new generations that give it a spin. In the time since, Marr has worked with The Cribs, Modest Mouse, Electronic, The The, and has had incarnations of solo projects like his work in The Healers. It wasn't until 2013 that Marr released music under just his name and even that instantly resonated with critics and fans alike. His guitar sound is unmistakable and transcends genre divides in the way that everyone takes notice. A generational fixture and one of the last remaining pillars of rock music, LA will be get a chance to see a fundamentally important artist up close and personal at the El Rey Theatre this weekend.

See A Some Sketch Comedy
Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre
5419 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90027

sunset.ucbtheatre.com

Asssscat, among improvisation comedy circles, is about as credible as it gets. A staple of the Upright Citizens Brigade, the monthly show features a rotating cast comedians working regularly in film and television in Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh, Sean Conroy, Lauren Lapkus, Joe Wengert and Zach Woods. The monologist functions as the moderator with regards to the direction of the show, but that's about as much structure as the show has. The rest is a brilliantly hilarious exercise in creativity and wit. The players skillfully navigate a brand sketch comedy and improvisation that ranks with the likes of Groundlings and Second City. Guaranteed laughs and a sincere respect for the craft, Asssscat is a tongue-in-cheek name with a solid reputation.

Secretly Root For Steph Curry
The Staples Center

Los Angeles, CA 90015

www.nba.com

Unless you follow basketball, a Laker game hasn't had the kind of appeal it's been accustomed to. To think even just a few years ago that getting Laker tickets would be easier than getting Clipper tickets would be a real thing, would almost be laughable. With Kobe announcing his farewell season and running through a seasonal victory lap, things have become a bit more interesting. But, with nostalgia aside, competition is not something the Lakers are used to being associated with. However, this Sunday, Steph Curry is coming to town. Flirting with the history books on a weekly basis, there is no denying that watching Steph hold court is a thing of beauty. Sure, you can pay your respects to Kobe, but you'll also find that admiration will segue into awe in watching Curry play.
