Best Of LA - Week Of March 9

We hope you've got a good appetite because this week in Los Angeles is stuffed to the throat with culinary and epicurean delights from wine tastings and dinners to restaurant anniversaries to the All-Star Chef Classic this weekend. Diners have two unique chances to work off their extra pounds: a special St. Patrick's Day dance party or the 30th annual Los Angeles marathon. Live theater, music, and television events round out the rest of this delicious week.

The team behind the popular Bar Covell, Dustin Lancaster and Matthew Kaner, have teamed up with longtime friend and wine collector Dave Gibbs to open their newest wine-themed concept, Sherman Oak's Augustine. The bar will rotate through 75 rare and vintage wines available by the glass (from $10-$100) and more by the bottle (from $100-$1000) as well as a selection of rare bottled beers and six beers on tap. Their selection includes rarities such as an 1874 Chateau Lafite and a 1934 Chateau Margaux Margaux as well as more approachable wines for the novice drinker.

Head to West Hollywood's Eveleigh tonight for their four-course wine dinner hosted by local winemaker Michael Terrien of Terrien, Poseidon & Obsidian Ridge. For $115, diners can learning about the winery's wines, including a yet-to-be-named Santa Cruz rosé debuting at the event, while dining on a family-style meal in the outdoor garden patio. Additional wines include a Vertical of Terrien's Chardonnay from Hanzell Vineyard Sonoma '07, '08', '09, 2013 Pinot Noir Poseidon Vineyard Los Carneros, Vertical of Cabernet Sauvignon from Obsidian Ridge Vineyard, Red Hills '05, '09, and '11, and Half Mile Obsidian ridge Cabernet from a single block, Red Hills 2010.

The Los Angeles premiere of Carrie the Musical begins this week at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts for a limited engagement. Based on the acclaimed novel by Stephen King, the musical includes a revised book by Lawrence D. Cohen, screenwriter of the classic film, lyrics by Academy-Award winner Dean Pitchford, and music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore. Directed by Brady Schwind, and with choreography by Imara Quiñónez, the cast will feature Emily Lopez as Carrie White, the powerful high schooler who is tormented by both her peers at school and mother at home.

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), led by Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, will present two presentations of Prokofiev's virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 2, featuring special guest violinist Joseph Swensen, as well as Mozart's resplendent Flute Concerto No. 1, highlighting LACO Principal Flute David Shostac. Swensen, an exceptional violinist, is active as both a soloist, conductor, and part of the recently formed trio KahaneSwensenBrey. Concert Preludes and pre-concert talks held one hour before curtain and are free for ticket holders. After the performance, ticket holders are invited to mingle with LACO musicians at an after-party featuring complimentary appetizers and drinks in the lobby.

Runners from all 50 states and 55 countries will convene on the streets of Los Angeles at the 2015 LA Marathon. Winding from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica, running past LA landmarks including Chinatown, the El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park, Los Angeles City Hall, Little Tokyo, the Disney Hall and Music Center of Los Angeles County, four different sites of the Academy Awards in Hollywood, parts of Historic Route 66 in West Hollywood, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and the famous runner's mecca of San Vicente Boulevard in Santa Monica. The event includes categories for participants 16 and older, including those using handcylces and wheelchairs. The LA Big 5K is open to participants of all ages.
