Best Library Programs For Kids In Los Angeles

Going to the library in Los Angeles these days is nothing like going to the library in the City of Angels, say, some two or three decades ago. Although books are still on offer and very much appreciated, so is everything from videos and CDs to the use of all kinds of computers. For kids, special programs offered at these prestigious public institutions pushing higher education are about as diverse as the subject matter covered within the specific outposts located all around town. That said, following are some of the best of this ilk offered in Southland libraries in 2015 and into 2016.

Los Angeles Central Library
630 W 5th St.

Take your preschoolers to the downtown public library for a special meeting of these young minds. After everyone has gathered, the games begin in the form of age appropriate (from two to five) story-telling, singing and even putting on plays using your little ones' fingers. This event is held throughout the year, so consult the calendar at the site above and then plan to get in on this library action.

Teens will want to flock to this library located on the east side of town on Nov. 14 between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. in order to get trained as a bona fide volunteer. Not only will these eager high schoolers be given community service credit (a great addition to any college application) for attending, but these teens will also learn what it is like to give something important back to their communities. The latter is a gift in and of itself, for now and for the future.

Studio City Library
12511 Moorpark St.
Studio City, CA 91604
(818) 755-7873

Baby and toddler story times are on the agenda at the Studio City Library, during which Miss Wendy takes your kids along on a fun experience through pertinent volumes of children's literature along with such aids as finger plays, songs and even felt board stories. Meanwhile, older youngsters enrolled in grades three through five will enjoy the on-site book club with copies for the next meeting available to be borrowed and read before the discussion begins. Looking for some lighter fare? Choose to attend this imaginative outpost for a session of the Building Blocks Club. These meetings encourage kids ages 2 through 11 and their kin to play with their imagination while building something that just may be considered an engineering marvel. You never know.

Therapy dogs love books, too. So why not have your children take part in reading to one of these trained pooches. The stories are read one-on-one, human to canine and often make your kid more comfortable with the whole reading aloud concept. Talk about a buddy program that benefits all. Note: this program is available throughout the year, so look at the calendar and pick a date that works for you.

Storytelling is on the agenda of this terrific branch of the public library system in Los Angeles where the tales are periodically told in the alluring Ernestine Avery Children's Wing. This helpful outpost gives kids all the advantages of a five-star library and more, up to and including help with homework when needed for students enrolled in kindergarten through the 8th grade. How about that for experiencing productive time while soaking up the storied stacks in Pasadena?
