The start of the 2016 season is still in the distance, but the buzz for the baseball season has begun. The Dodgers are hosting their Fan Fest this Saturday as one of the first official events to welcome new skipper Dave Roberts. With autograph sessions, Dodger legend meet and greets, dugout photo ops and every fan getting to run the bases, there is plenty to do for those that bleed blue. The event is free for those that register online and will run from 10am to 4pm and will include a Dodger market and interactive activities for the kids.
Attend The Museum of Neon Art
216 S. Brand Blvd.
Glendale, CA 91209
(213)489-9918
www.new-neonmona.org
A visual bridge between the science behind kinetic art and a comprehensive visual snapshot of the history of Los Angeles via signage, the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale is home to an impressive collection of familiar branding and artistic flair. With iconic signs like the neon for the Brown Derby of Hollywood's Golden Era, to generational staples like the Manny, Moe, and Jack Pep Boys trio, the shiny lights and timeless design give you plenty reason to stop and stare. The big pieces in the collection come with enough detail to admire how intricate the whole is and that doesn't begin to address the story behind each of the anchors of the collection. A lesser known art destination in LA, MoNA is worth adding to your list of museums.
The Los Angeles Taco Takedown
El Cid
4212 Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90029
(323) 668-0318
www.thetakedowns.com
The foodie folks at The Takedowns decided that taco festivals were old hat. Then they decided that cooking competitions were also old hat. Somewhere the marriage of the two resulted in the Taco Takedown in the hub of taco culture, Los Angeles. The premise is simple. The Takedowns issued an open cattle call to all local cooks, "bring your best taco filling and we (La Princesita) will provide the handmade tortillas. The judging public will then consume copious amounts of tacos and determine who is tops. The winner will not only claim some very real bragging rights, but some professional kitchen gear. This is a real thing… a very real, very awesome thing.
Attend The Aquarium Of The Pacific
100 Aquarium Way
Long Beach, CA 90802
(562) 590-3100
www.aquariumofpacific.org
In terms of numbers alone, the Aquarium of the Pacific is about as state of the art as it gets. This non-profit facility houses more than 11,000 animals spanning some 500 different species in exhibits that range from 5,000 to 350,000 gallons of water. The 5-acre plot is home to some of the most intensive conservation efforts in the country with a force of over 650 volunteers all committed to education and preservation. With the permanent installations dedicated to the Northwestern, Tropical Pacific, and Baja California regions, the aptly named Aquarium of the Pacific does a great job of highlighting the marine wildlife of the left coast, while being staunch advocates for all the animals that call it home.
