Traffic Headache: Benedict Canyon To See Long-Term Closures

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Drivers traveling between the Westside and the San Fernando Valley could experience an increase in traffic congestion over the coming months because of the closure of a major thoroughfare due to a water pipeline project.

Benedict Canyon Drive, which runs from Beverly Hills through to Beverly Glen and links Sunset Boulevard north to Mulholland Drive, will see closures between May 1 and Nov. 30 so that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power can replace a one-mile stretch of an aging water pipeline.

According to LADWP, between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, Benedict Canyon will be closed between Mulholland and Hutton drives. The closures will also run between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on certain Saturdays.

During the closure hours, only residents and designated visitors will be allowed access to homes and businesses on Benedict and Liebe drives. LADWP Officers will be placed at the intersections of Benedict Canyon and Mulholland as well as Benedict Canyon and Hutton to monitor access.

Benedict Canyon and Liebe will be open to the public outside of those hours, LADWP said.

The closure will allow LADWP to replace 5,200 feet of pipe and adding four new fire hydrants.

A dedicated hotline has been set up for any questions regarding the closure: 213-367-1222.
