Bank Robbery Suspect Claims He Has Explosives In Stanton

STANTON (CBSLA.com) — A bank robbery suspect stopped by police claims he has explosives, prompting the evacuations around Katella and Western avenues in Stanton.

A bank robbery was reported at 10:44 a.m. at Bank of the West, 11051 Beach Boulevard, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Authorities say the robbery threatened a bank teller with a note, indicating he was armed with a gun and explosives.

Deputies saw a maroon Chevrolet Corvette in the area of Katella and Western avenues after a description of the bank robbery suspect and his vehicle were broadcast and conducted a felony traffic stop, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

Danny Ray Worrell, 62, was taken into custody, and told the deputies there were explosives in the older model Corvette he was driving, Hallock said.

A bomb squad was called out to check the vehicle and the road has been closed at Western and Katella, authorities said. A 300-foot area around the vehicle in the parking lot at the northwest corner of Katella and Western was evacuated.

A robot was sent to check the vehicle for explosives. No explosives were found in the car, but investigators did find an amount of cash they believe was taken during the robbery, authorities said.

The FBI will book the suspect, who does not appear to have been linked to any other robberies, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.
