Baca Offers Hybrid Plan To Supervise Calif. Prison Parolees
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The county's top law enforcement official on Friday backed off a plan for deputies to handle an expected influx of prison parolees from the California penal system.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has decided against an effort to have deputies take on supervisory duties for parolees after their release in addition to their enforcement duties.
KNX 1070's Ron Kilgore reports the move would have possible made L.A. County the first department in the nation to ever take on such a role.

Instead, Baca is hoping to get a hybrid plan approved, one that would limit the department's responsibilities when it comes to parolees.
"The sheriff's department would be doing community supervision with parolees at large — mostly all of the necessary enforcement end of things, such as compliance checks at various locations," said spokesperson Nicole Nishida.
The L.A.S.D. would still run education programs within county jails and offer some offenders rehabilitation programs as alternatives to traditional jail time.
The L.A. County Board of Supervisors would also need to approve any plan before its implementation.
