Baby Great White Shark Spotted In Waters Off Huntington, Manhattan Beaches
MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A juvenile great white shark was spotted off the shore of Manhattan Beach Friday.
The shark, which was sighted about 200 yards off El Porto Beach in the Manhattan Beach area at about 12:30 p.m., could be the same shark spotted in Huntington Beach waters at 10:49 a.m. by an Anaheim police helicopter.
That shark, initially estimated to be 10 to 12 feet, triggered a closure of the waters because of its size and approximate age, Huntington Beach Marine Safety Lt. Claude Panis said.
A lifeguard went to check on a jet-ski with directions from the helicopter pilot, he said.
"When we got a good look at it (the shark) was no bigger than seven feet," Panis said. "It was just a baby juvenile great white -- typical of what we've been seeing all year now."
Beach access in Huntington Beach was closed for just 15 minutes.
Los Angeles County Fire Department's lifeguard division tweeted the shark – estimated to be 5 feet long – was spotted about 75 yards off shore.
