Authorities Probe Fiery Crash On 110 Freeway That Killed Infant
LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — An investigation was under way Saturday into a fiery collision that killed an infant in Highland Park.
The multi-vehicle crash was reported at 5:25 p.m. Friday on the southbound lanes of the 110 Freeway near York Boulevard, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.
The California Highway Patrol says the infant, identified as a 1-year-old girl, was in a car that had stopped on a narrow, curved stretch of the freeway because of a flat tire. It burst into flames when it was hit by an approaching SUV.
The CHP says several people, including the girl's mother, tried to rescue her but were driven back by the flames. Others tried to douse the fire with a garden hose, buckets of water and an extinguisher.
Authorities say two people went to a hospital with burns. The girl's mother and the other driver were also hospitalized. Their conditions and identities were not immediately available.
