'Austin Powers' Actor Convicted In Rape, Torture Of OC Woman
SANTA ANA (CBS) — An actor who appeared in the original "Austin Powers" movie was convicted Thursday of torturing and raping a woman in Orange County.
He was acquitted of a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
Joseph Hyungmin Son, of Garden Grove, faces up to 15 years to life in prison. His scheduling was scheduled for Sept. 9, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
The victim, who was 19 years old at the time, testified last week that she was abducted at gunpoint in the early morning of Christmas Eve in 1990 by two men near her Huntington Beach apartment. She was forced into a vehicle, driven to an unknown location and was repeatedly tortured and sexually assaulted.
The victim testified her attackers threatened to kill her several times before they pushed her out of the vehicle naked, with her pants tied around her eyes.
Son was arrested in October 2008 while serving jail time for a probation violation. A sample of his DNA was matched to evidence kept from the 1990 assault and he was charged with rape, kidnapping and firearms offenses.
The actor appeared in the 1997 film "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" as henchman "Random Task", and in a number of action films in the 1990s.
Another man, 40-year-old Santiago Gaitan, was sentenced in January to 17 years in prison for his role in the attack.
