Attorney: Evidence Will Get Case Against LA Kings' Voynov Dropped
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — A lawyer for Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov, who was arrested and suspended indefinitely after allegations of domestic violence, said Wednesday that he does not expect his client to be charged with a crime.
Craig Renetzky says that Voynov did not assault a woman at his home in Redondo Beach on Sunday night, which had led to his arrest at the hospital. The attorney says he possesses evidence that he believes will get the case against his client dropped.
"I don't think there's been a crime or any criminal activity in this case at all," Renetzky said. "I can't go into specific details; however, what has occurred is that I spent over an hour with her yesterday, utilizing a Russian language interpreter."
Images were captured Monday of the victim getting out of an SUV, with a large bandage on her forehead, before she entered Voynov's house.
"What I can definitely clarify is that at no point did my client punch her," Renetzky said.
Renetzky was not at liberty to say what had led to the woman's injury, but he did say he does not want people to compare the incident to the recent case of NFL player Ray Rice punching his then-fiance in an elevator, knocking her unconscious.
Neighbors said they had heard screaming in the vicinity of Voynov's home, which lasted for about 20 minutes Sunday evening.
Renetzky says that Voynov and the woman are together, that she does not live in fear of him and never has.
