1 Dead, 3 Injured In 2 Crashes At South LA Intersection

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — One person was killed and three others were injured Tuesday night in two separate high-speed crashes at the same intersection.

Eight vehicles and a cyclist were involved in the wrecks, which took place at around 7:50 p.m. on West Manchester Avenue and Broadway near the 110 Freeway, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Police say the first crash involved a black Dodge Charger that collided with a pickup truck.

The second accident occurred when a silver Pontiac crashed into a Saturn. Jose Cuevas, the driver of the Saturn, died on what was the Downey resident's 39th birthday. Three other people were transported to a local hospital, where one them remains in critical condition.

Initial reports suggest that the fatal crash may have been the result of street racing between the Pontiac and another vehicle down Broadway, with one driving the wrong way and running a red light.

"We have someone in custody at this time. We're still determining whether they are a suspect," Det. Hal Jones said.

The driver of the Pontiac, however, remains outstanding.

Prior to the crash, a drive-by shooting was reported one mile from the scene at 79th Street and Hoover. Authorities are trying to determine if the shooting and the fatal collision are related.
