54 Arrests Made During Walmart Protest In Chinatown
CHINATOWN (CBSLA.com) — Police say 54 people were arrested Thursday night during a Walmart protest in Chinatown.
Demonstrators gathered outside the retail store to support workers at a half-dozen local Walmarts who walked off the job, claiming the world's biggest retailer retaliates against workers who demand better pay and more full-time jobs.
Sky2's Derek Bell reports protesters formed a circle on a street outside the store at 701 W Cesar E Chavez Ave., blocking traffic. Hundreds of others gathered on the sidewalk.
Police issued a dispersal order at 6p.m.
Those who were arrested face charges of failing to disperse.
The arrests come a day after a protest outside a Walmart in Paramount, where about 100 people gathered.
The demonstration was organized by a group known as Our Walmart, whose members contend that 1.5 million people could escape from poverty if they were paid at least $25,000 a year.
