Arrest Made In Officer-Involved Shooting At South LA Gang Party
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man who allegedly fired at Los Angeles police officers at a South Los Angeles gang party is in custody Tuesday on $1 million bail.
Quentin Durity, 23, was wounded in the shoulder when an officer fired back at him during the incident, which happened at 10:35 p.m. Sunday at 99th and Hoover streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
No officers were injured.
Durity was booked for attempted murder of a police officer, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Tuesday morning at police headquarters. No court date was immediately set for his arraignment.
Three other men were arrested at the scene for weapons violations, and police seized nine firearms, including handguns, a rifle and an assault weapon, Beck said.
Gang officers were patrolling in the area when they saw the gathering at a known "gang congregation point," and they stopped to investigate, the chief said. That's when people began running away and a person fired a shot at officers, Beck said.
One officer fired one shot in response, Beck said.
As the officers were detaining people for questioning, a man later identified as Durity was seen in the area with a gunshot wound, and he was taken into custody, Beck said.
Investigators later determined that a number of gang members had gathered at the location in the wake of a recent gang-related shooting, and that it is possible that "retaliation was imminent" had the officers not stopped to investigate, Beck said.
